What Are the Symptoms of Needing a Root Canal?

Ali Sedighian • February 28, 2023

Are you worried that you might need a root canal? There is nothing to worry about! Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures. Under the right conditions, a root canal can be a wonderful way to save a tooth rather than remove it.

What is a root canal?

Sometimes the soft, inner tissue of a tooth, which is called the pulp , can become infected. This can happen when a cavity is left untreated or when a tooth’s enamel is damaged, allowing bacteria to enter. A tooth infection can be painful, and it can lead to tooth decay.

If the pulp of your tooth is infected or inflamed , your dentist may recommend an endodontic treatment (a treatment of the inner tooth) called a root canal. During a root canal, the infected or inflamed pulp is removed, saving the rest of the tooth. The tooth is then treated and the areas with missing pulp are filled.

What are some signs that you might need a root canal?

The best way to determine whether or not a root canal is the best treatment for your tooth is to make an appointment with your dentist.

Let’s explore some of the signs and symptoms that could mean you need a root canal:

Lingering pain

Tooth pain can have many causes. However, if your pain feels like it is radiating from your tooth deep into your jaw, it could be a sign of infection or inflammation of the tooth. If that is the case, the pain might be worsened when you chew your food. If the pain is persistent, it could be a sign that you need a root canal.

Swollen or discolored gums

If you notice that your gums are swollen, or if they appear to be darker in color, it could be an indication that an infection from your tooth has spread to your gums. You might also find small bumps on your gums–these may be filled with an acidic pus from the infected tooth.

Heat and cold sensitivity

When the pulp of a tooth is infected or inflamed, it can cause damage to the nerves in the tooth. This can lead to sensitivity to hot and cold. If you find that you are in pain while drinking a hot beverage or while eating something very cold like ice cream, this could be a sign that you may need a root canal.

Tooth damage

If your tooth is chipped or cracked, that can be a sign that the pain in your tooth may stem from an infection. Bacteria may have entered through the broken enamel. Your dentist can address both the damaged tooth and the infection or inflammation within it through a root canal and other treatments.
